Day 27 – Thursday 11th October 2007 Shopping/Swimming & McDonalds
Another easy start to the day, headed off to the shops for some last minutes pick ups. Nothing too exciting, went into ‘Bed, Bath & Table’ who had a big Christmas display where we saw the oddest Christmas item yet, a shower curtain with full on Christmas design on it, and 12 hooks to hang it from that say ‘Merry Christmas’…..very bizarre.
Michael took kids to putt putt while I did some more packing, and a final quick trip to Walmart. We came home for lunch then spent some time at the pool complex in the resort here. Water was a bit too cold for me, but everyone else coped. Made me look forward to swimming in our own pool again. Checked out the Wagga forecast and I see it’s only going to be 16 there on Saturday, boy am I glad we’re missing that. We had well and truly adjusted to mid 30’s each day, thankfully it’s meant to be 26 when we arrive on Monday, so that’s an improvement.
Dinner tonight was something the kids have been asking for since we arrived (particularly Lauren), and we finally did it…..the World’s biggest McDonald’s, which is in Orlando, just north of our hotel, quite close to Universal Studios. We drove round part of Universal Studios to get an idea of it, does look good, and once the Harry Potter theme park opens would be very tempting to return for a holiday there. Brayden is certainly trying to push that idea, but he’ll need to work on earning his first million to pay for this travel bug he’s picked up. McDonalds was big, and very loud, full of heaps of arcade/pinball type games, and also the World’s biggest McDonalds playgym which the girls enjoyed. It also deserves the title of the World’s slowest service McDonalds, we ordered our food reasonably smoothly, but then there’s a separate line to actually pay for and receive your meal, and Michael waited about 25mins for that! They have a ‘gourmet’ counter as well, so I got excited and thought I might actually get something decent. Ordered the ‘chef recommended’ angel hair pasta with shrimp, which when it finally arrived bore no resemblance whatsoever to the lovely picture on the menu. I ate the 7 shrimp and a bit of pasta and then filled up on coke. The nuggets were gross too (grosser than usual that is), Hayley picked that there were actually 2 layers of fat, a thinner first layer, then the usual big chunky layer. Lauren lapped them up though, even with no sweet and sour sauce available.
Hayley’s eczema is really bad these last few days. It’s been there a bit most of the trip, but this last week it’s all over her arms, a bit behind the knees and even her chin, cheeks and eyelids. The arms in particular are so sore, red and weeping, looks nasty. We went to a chemist and got some cortisone cream, and then zinc cream to apply over that, which helps slightly but not much. Hoping to get her into the Dr as soon as we get home.
Have managed to fully pack 2 bags, and partially pack the others. So far looking OK space wise, but it’s amazing how much all the last minute extras add up when it all comes together finally. We have somehow managed to lose Michael’s 40th birthday present. We’d bought him a watch, which he opened on the first Monday here, and then put in one of the suitcases for safe keeping as he didn’t want to wear it to the theme parks and damage it. But today I’ve emptied and repacked all the suitcases and no sign of it, which is a very frustrating mystery. Hoping it will somehow turn up when we finish packing, or maybe it’s in a bag and I just didn’t notice it, but it’s certainly odd.
Tomorrow will be an early start, off to Magic Kingdom for our last day of Disney. Even I was feeling sad off and on today thinking of our final visit.
