Day 14 – Friday 28th September 2007 “Freeport, Bahamas”
Well this was definitely our least favourite port, would love to know why they replaced Nassau with this, looked like there was much more to do at Nassau. This was such an expensive place (don’t ask me how they could have called it ‘Free’port). The transport from the port was heavily controlled, we all had to pay $5 each way per person to be taken into the main centre where there were yet more markets full of expensively priced cheap souvenirs. The quality of some of the T Shirts and other junk makes Bali look high class – yet the American’s were happily paying $US15 for a T Shirt that looks like it will shrink first wash. We’re all wanting to go back to Bali for the prices of everything – beer, souvenirs, clothing, transport, food, you name it, it’s ridiculous how much things cost here, and in USD too. Haven’t bought much at all since being on the cruise, but I did get a beaded bracelet in Belize the other day, it was $USD8, but the same thing in Bali would have been $1. What was amazing was at the shopping talk they did on the cruise the Carnival guy who was speaking told us all what fabulous shopping and great bargains were available, and even said he’d been to Bali and there were much better deals at these cruise ports than there…..don’t know how he can get away with telling such porkies. The best story we heard about Carnival salesmanship though was from an American couple we met on our cave tubing tour. The lady is a nurse from Memphis Tennessee (named Misty Moore), she went to a talk onboard where Carnival were spruiking their beauty and facial products. The Carnival woman apparently got up and said that many diseases were due to the chemicals in products we consume…….and quoted Alzheimers as being caused by shampoo!! Her logic was that it’s the brain that’s affected by Alzheimers, and where do you use shampoo…..yes, that’s right, on your head, so obviously shampoo causes Alzheimers, and everyone should buy the expensive Carnival non-Alzheimer causing shampoo. Misty was saying her husband had to hold her down to stop her getting up and saying this was a load of crock……but apparently there were plenty of poor gullible people who were lining up to buy the shampoo. On the positive side though, at least my Dad should be Alzheimer free, shame about the rest of us!!
While we were in Freeport the girls got their hair braided, a half braid this time, just up to the top of their head, then normal free hair at the back, looks quite good (but again, about 4x what we pay in Bali!) Will try to load a photo of them. We went to the beach in the main part of town, lovely white sands and clear water, had a nice swim, then paid our $5/person to go back to the ship for a late lunch. Was a shame to finish with such a dud port when we’ve loved every other place so much.
The photos we had taken at formal night last night turned out well, got a particularly lovely close up one of the three kids that we’ll frame…more money for Carnival from us! Had a pretty quiet night tonight, final dinner with our wonderful waiters, got a photo I’ll try to load of all of us with them. The show tonight is not until 10.30pm, we want to get an early night and finish packing so we can get going in the morning and check into our new home. Had a text from Lori-Lee saying they’re in Orlando and off to Disney in the morning, we’ll catch up with them on Sunday.
