Day 26 – Wednesday 10th October 2007 Downtown Disney
Easy start to the morning, then headed to Downtown Disney. Boys + Hayley went to Disney Quest, the game zone place with Dave & Zander. Spent 6 hours there designing and riding their own roller coaster, playing the Pirates of the Caribbean game and many others. Lauren, Lori-Lee, Tara & I did the shops at Downtown Disney, it is just amazing how much Disney merchandise there is. Anything you could imagine with Mickey & co on is there. Had a fabulous Christmas decoration shop, Karen had seen it and warned me I’d love it. I was actually very restrained in there as I’d already bought an ornament for ourselves, and then the Lucas’ bought us a lovely one that said ‘happy holidays’ and ‘Our Disney vacation’ on as a holiday memento which was very sweet. Was so much fun to look though, couldn’t imagine how many variations on Mickey that you could work into different ornaments/collectibles. There is just something amazing about Disney’s marketing, it’s all encompassing. They make it so much fun to shop (the whole family enjoys their stores, which says something), and after a few minutes you really start to think that you just must have that oven mitt/glass/t shirt/plate/necklace/tie/socks/hat etc etc etc with some sort of a Disney logo. Takes the utmost restraint to walk out with only a couple of bags.
After a few hours shopping Lauren, Lori-Lee, Tara & I went back to their hotel for another swim in their wonderful pool/beach complex. We barely saw the girls who were having a lovely time while Lori-Lee and I lay back with our magazines and a pina colada each on the pool lounge. All too soon we said our goodbyes, they fly home tomorrow, and we headed back to Disney Quest to pick up Michael, Hayley & Brayden.
We went to a local Thai restaurant for dinner, quite nice, the Massaman curry flavour was gorgeous, but the meat was strips, not cubes so one strike for them. Michael said I could buy him one Mickey T shirt, so I got a orange polo with a tiny Mickey in the corner. I pulled it out to show him at dinner and realised the security tag was still attached….so after dinner it was back to Downtown Disney we went to get the tag removed. Of course that meant we all had to walk into the shop (biggest Disney store in the world), and the Disney marketing magic started working its charms again….. Madeleine had got a (non permanent) Disney tattoo while she was here, so kids were all looking forward to getting one just before we left as they only last 6 days. Tara however had gotten a ‘hair wrap’, where they completely wrap several strands of your hair together in multi coloured cotton thread, and then finish off with a few beads, and it lasts up to 2 months, so they decided to go for that. We ended up getting that done while we were there tonight, so that just leaves Brayden to get his tattoo on our last day or so. It was amazing just how busy Downtown Disney was at night versus day. So many people must spend their days at the theme parks then head there for some serious shopping (there are nightclubs there as well), the store we were in (and its huge) was jam packed.
I actually spent an hour tonight organising some of the purchases and almost finished packing just 1 bag. I’m hoping the rest will be quick and is should be mainly our clothes, which won’t take as much thought to pack. The Atlas 5 rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral about 8.30pm tonight (nearly 3 hours ago now). Anything NASA related is so much more interesting now that we’ve been there, as soon as we hear a mention on the news we all drop everything to look see. We’d intended to watch the skies to get a view, but with all the Downtown Disney to’ing and fro’ing completely forgot about it till we saw footage on tonight’s late news. We’re going to have a quietish day tomorrow, some mini golf and then swim in the pool complex here, saving our last full day on Friday for our final day at Magic Kingdom……think it won’t just be Lauren crying when we leave that one!
