Day 10 – Monday 24th September 2007 Mexico - Cozumel/Tulum
We went our separate ways today. Hayley was a lot better, she & Lauren did the Camp Carnival program and enjoyed it. Michael & Brayden went into Cozumel where we had docked, an island off the southern coast of Mexico and had a good day wandering round the town. They had soft chicken tacos for lunch and really enjoyed them, also bought a couple of T Shirts.
I did a tour to the Mayan ruins at Tulum, on the Mexican mainland. Caught a ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen, then went on a bus for an hour to the ruins. Our guide was extremely verbose, and must have said the phrase ‘do you get it’ about 1000 times in the 2 hours we were with him. We had free time walking round the ruins on our own, which was my favourite part, these ruins are right on the beach, a very picturesque location. It was over 100 degrees today, thank goodness we were near the beach as there was at least a slight breeze. I was just dripping by the end though, but it was definitely worth it, got some great photos too. There are 6000 Mayan ruin sites in Mexico, quite amazing. Heaps of iguanas all around, you’d hear a rustle and one would be right near you, which always made me jump. Would have been so much better to have been able to do an individual tour, without the 50 other Americans on the bus, but it was this or nothing.
Hayley finally joined us in the dining room for dinner tonight, which was a novelty for us all. Brayden is just loving the food, he’s had New York Sirloin the first 2 nights, and tonight was teriyaki lamb rack…..he’s certainly getting his iron quota this week. We arrive in Belize tomorrow morning, hoping to do cave tubing there, although we’d organised it with a guy on the internet (haven’t paid anything yet) but he’s now not answering his email, so we’ll see if anyone turns up for us tomorrow. If not we’ll just check out Belize.
